This is a smart thing to do, because people will always
need quality information, and if it's good, they will pay
you well for it.
Now, what do you do when you want to get started

Find Another Party"
The marketing arena is crowded. No doubt about it.
It's crowded with generalists. And when a place gets
crowded with folks who do the same thing in the
same way at the same time... it gets loud.
Getting noticed gets tougher.
Be a specialist. Find a niche. Study it. Analyze
it to death. Devote yourself to it and become
KNOWN for it.
Separate yourself from the flock.

- Even A Numbers Game Can Be Personal
I love Starbucks.
I love sitting there, sipping my cup of java and
doing my work.
The employees know me. And the customers know
me. They SHOULD. I'm there every night. It's where
I feel at home.
Some guys do well in dance clubs. Good for them.
I don't. I need to TALK.
I can't do the "quick pick-up" thing. I need to interact.
My friend Jacob calls it my Jedi mind trick. He's cynical.
I call it getting to know someone. Actually HEARING
what that person is SAYING.
Let's apply this to marketing.
Yeah, automation is important.
Having a responsive subscriber list in the thousands
is important, too.
But, in the end, it's all about the person on the other
side of your conversation.
Always HAS been.
Now, I'm not saying you have to suck up to that person.
Hell, argue with him if you want. Push a little. Shove a
little.
Just treat him like a PERSON. Not an e-mail address.
- Going Home Doesn't Mean Defeat
I'm sure the "one-night, dance-floor" score is invigorating.
Frankly, I wouldn't know. Like I said, it ain't my style.
But, for many men, it's a constant rite of passage.
Going for the quick kill has been romanticized in
men's lore since the first man sauntered up to the
first woman and worked his magic.
Boys in high school locker rooms and college dorms
poke and prod each other toward it.
Adult men in corporate offices entertain each other
with grand stories of conquests from weekends past.
It's celebrated with sly winks and high fives.
But, it's short-sighted. Counterproductive, in the long-run.
Let's apply it to marketing.
Often, a conquest isn't a repeat customer. It's a kill.
It's like lopping off the head of the proverbial golden
egg-laying chicken.
Your market deserves better.
Give her a kiss. Tell her goodnight. Then, go home.
Call her the next day for a second date (or a third.
Or a thirtieth.)
Show some respect. Some style. Some substance.
It's your first date. If your widget (ebook, Report, software
app.) isn't right for her, don't worry about making the kill.
Go for the long-term relationship.
Your market will continue to buy.
Last Thoughts
Ya gotta stand out from the crowd. Otherwise, marketing
is an uphill battle.
You can be loud and obnoxious, or you can find a
niche to play in.
You can treat everyone like a numbers game or you
can treat 'em like PEOPLE.
You can go for the quick kill (the one night stand) or
you can start a relationship that yields fruit over the
long-term.
Look, the whole POINT of this article is to give you
ideas about how you can avoid competition and
dominate a niche.
Common sense, really. But, sometimes, we need
to remind ourselves.
You get the point.
Besides, my body's beginning to groove to the beat
of some thumping music I just picked up...
